Allowable Chemical-Free Insect/Disease/Weed Controls

The Brentwood Community Garden is a Chemical-Free Site!
Allowable Controls for Plant Insects/Diseases and Weeds:
ü  Diatomaceous earth (horticultural/food grade only, no additives) – for crawling insects such as ants
ü  Milk - for powdery mildew (mix 1 part whole milk to 9 parts water and use as a foliar spray)
ü  Garlic foliar sprays
ü  Corn meal – for ants
ü  Coffee grounds – for slugs
ü  Egg shells – for slugs
ü  Beer or yeast/sugar mix – for slugs
ü  Vinegar (in pathways only or applied directly to leaves/stems of weeds)
ü  Boiling water (in pathways only)
ü  Salt (in pathways only)
ü  Netting – for birds
ü  Row covers – for flea beetles, cabbage moths (must set up early in season before insects emerge)


Any questions regarding the use of insect/weed/disease controls in the garden may be directed to the Organizing Committee.  This list is subject to revision.
