Guidelines


This Membership Agreement covers the time period between 1 November 2016 and 31 October 2017 and entitles each household to one garden bed for one growing season.

1.    2016 Garden members ‘in good standing’ (who have abided by the Garden Membership Agreement & Guidelines) have an early renewal option of their membership for a reduced fee of thirty dollars ($30.00 for a 4’ by 8’ bed) and fifteen dollars ($15.00 for the 4’ x 4’ bed) and must register and pay for that bed before 31 October 2016. Every attempt will be made to assign the same garden bed.
2.    Any garden beds that are not renewed before 31 October 2016  will be offered for rent on
1 February, 2017 -on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis for a fee of thirty-five dollars ( $35.00) for a regular 4’ x 8’ garden bed, and seventeen dollars ( $17.00) for a 4’x4’ bed.
3.    Second Beds - After 30 April 2017, any unrented beds may be rented by gardeners who already have a garden bed.
4.    Membership fees will be reviewed annually and are non-refundable. Payment must be made in full at the time of signing the contract and paid by cash or cheque (payable to ‘Brentwood Community Association’) and must include your VALID Brentwood Community Association (BCA) membership number and its expiry date.
5.    All members (both residents and non-residents of Brentwood) who rent a garden bed must purchase a current year Brentwood Community Association (BCA) membership covering the duration of the gardening season. Note: The BCA membership must be valid for the period of 1 November, 2016 to 31 October 2017.
6.    All members must attend the ‘Annual Growers Meeting’ (AGM) on Wednesday, 12 April 2017 from 7:30 to 8:30 pm.
7.    All members are expected to participate in the ongoing maintenance of the Brentwood Community Garden by signing up at the AGM and participating in the following garden events:
7.1.  Spring Clean-Up on Sat 13 May 2017 (back-up date of 20 May 2017 in case of inclement weather).
7.2.  Autumn Clean-Up on Sat 30 September 2017 (back-up date of 7 October 2017 in case of inclement weather).
7.3.  One scheduled garden grooming work-party during the summer (June/July/August) to perform a variety of ongoing gardening tasks as assigned by the work-party team leader.


 Rules of the Garden:
1.    No chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or insecticides may be used in the garden.
2.    All soil and compost brought into the garden must be organic.
3.    Composting and mulching guidelines must be followed - no meat or dairy products; no    fats or baked goods; no diseased plants, weeds or items gone-to-seed.
4.    Beds and the surrounding paths must be kept free of weeds.
5.    Insect infestations will be managed, where possible, by manual/organic means.
6.    Weeds must be disposed of in garbage containers, not in the compost bin.
7.    No smoking is allowed in the garden.
8.    No pets are allowed in the garden.
9.    Children must be supervised at all times.
10.  Members must arrange to ensure their garden is maintained during their absence and that the gravel pathways adjacent to their bed are kept weed free.
11.  To prevent waste and spoilage of produce, gardens not properly maintained (seeded, planted, weeded, watered, harvested, cleaned up) will revert back to the BCGG Organizing Committee (7 days after notification to the member).
12.  Members will plant only non-invasive crops that won’t spread beyond the borders of their garden bed. Crop height must not shade neighbouring beds.
13.  Trellises and row covers must be stable in all weather conditions and must not shade other gardens.
14.  Items of a permanent nature are not allowed in the members’ garden beds, e.g. the use of nails, screws, or permanent decorations is prohibited.
15.  When there is mulch or compost available, members will take only their share (as determined by the BCGG Organizing Committee) and leave enough for other gardeners.
16.  Members will conserve water and use mulch when possible.
17.  Members will only pick plant produce or flowers from their own garden bed.
18.  Members will recognize that the harvest of communal fruit in the perimeter beds is for all members.
19.  Members will be responsible for their own hand-tools and ensure that shared tools and equipment are cleaned after each use and stored appropriately.
20.  Gate should be kept closed and secured.  Water should be turned off and hoses stored properly after each use.
21.  Members will be respectful of the neighbours living near the garden by parking in the lot adjacent to the garden site or on the west side of 33 Street.
22.  Members failing to abide by this agreement and guidelines may not be invited to rent for the next gardening season.
